Alphabe-Thursday

V is for Vegetable Garden
Hubs and I plant a large vegetable garden.  We use to garden in raised beds when we lived in the city and had more than enough to can our yearly salsa supply and other goodies.  When we moved into this home the previous owners had a very large garden quite a ways out on the back acres.  Hubs has decided to continue on in that garden.  I sometimes think it is his excuse to drive his large garden tractor every day after the weather clears up in the spring.  Quite a few of the Alpabe-Thursday participants were concerned that all of our tomato plants I showed on T week would be eaten by the animals who's tracks I also showed that week.  Never fear there is a very high fence surrounding our vegetable garden.
Hubs used this as a child when his parents had a garden.  It was his grandfathers before that.  He replaced the old wheel on it a couple of years ago and actually runs it between the rows to help with the weeding.  Not to worry this is not how we work up the ground for our garden, we have a garden tiller for that.  Last years garden was not very good.  We had so much rain in the spring we were not able to get it in until almost the first of June and then our summer was not hot enough for good growth.  It was disappointing after having such a great garden the first year we lived here.  If you would like to see what we are hoping for our garden to look like this year you can go to this previous post: Garden 2008.
I am linking up to Jenny Matlock's Alphabe-Thursday party.  If you would like to read some other posts by some spectacular participants I hope you will go over for a visit.

  9. That is a huge garden, and a lot of work! Our garden is not nearly so big, I can't imagine all that space. How do you keep the weeds at bay? Thanks for sharing your Vegetable Garden with us.

  10. Very nice "V" post. I can't believe the size of your garden especially since you stated that your city garden was even bigger! I hope your garden bursts with veggies so you can have a huge salsa supply. Keep up the good work.

  11. That's a serious fence!...no critters are going to get into that garden. You'll be canning salsa for weeks and enjoying its heat all winter!

  19. Well the weather seems to be better than it was last year and I don't think we have to worry about a cool summer this year.
Fresh veggies are the best. From a quickly salad to beans beans and more beans... mmmmmm. Now I want fresh corn on the cob.

  25. Oh Brenda. I love this garden. It reminds me so much of my gardens in Ohio, right down to the cultivator.

Do you compost? I didn't see any bins around but your soil looks lovely and rich.

I hope your trip is great...

My trip hear certainly was as I stopped today on my little journey through Alphabe-Thursday's letter "V"!

  27. Hi Brenda! Oh My, you have a REAL garden...a good old-fashioned kind that lets you can and freeze etc. Mine is small...raised containers...just freshies during the summer. I bet you're also happy to see autumn come too. I remember I was when I was a kid. My mama had us busy in the kitchen during canning time. shery

  29. Nice garden, very organized :)
hubby loves to garden, but we haven't had one in a few years as he must put his energies into some waaay overdue home improvements as we need to have this house sold in about 1.5 years.
